Sounds as if you've got your WAV file volume turned down (all internal sounds--beeps, startup, shutdown, etc.--are by default WAV files). To determine and change this, double-click your system tray volume control icon. This will bring up a multi-channel mixer, where you will find your overall volume control as well as individual controls for wave (WAV), software synthesizer (MIDI, IIRC), and CD Player. You probably have a discrepancy between the setting for CDs and waves. If you're happy with the CD volume, equalize the wave volume with it and you're good to go.

Hi,

Wondering if anyone has any ideas how I might fix this sound issue on my PC. Sound works when playing a cd, visiting a web site. I use Windows Media Player so nothing else fancy. However, "inner program sounds" are either at a lower level or non-existent. It's like the sound lowers it's sound level on it's own to very quiet or to nothing. Have checked all software settings, hardware connections and even reformatted the drive - same problem exists. Any ideas? Running WinXP Home edition.
