I logged into the account and found the following:
perl module paths
/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.3/i386-freebsd
/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.3
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3/i386-freebsd
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.3
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl
What does that mean? It says that the path to perl is /usr/bin/perl and
the version is 5.8.3.

nuts too. I have tried your script on various test beds and it has
worked each time with every variation discussed so far.

another print statement and the script gives me the 500 server error
