Ah, got it. Yes, I'm familiar with Tux as a mascot; I receive Chris
Pirillo's "Lockergnome's Linux Fanatics" newsletter just to keep up on
developments, although I hardly qualify as a "fanatic" (about pretty much
anything, come to think of it). I have tried a few of the "no install
required" distros, most recently Knoppix, which I was pleased and a little
surprised to find recognized pretty much everything in my home-built system
and configured it, except that I couldn't get my preferred video resolution
out of my video card. It does come in handy when one of my "civilian"
clients has downloaded (deliberately or unknowingly) a few dozen toolbars,
BHOs, adware/spyware, etc. and so hosed his system that it won't even boot
to Windows anymore, but I don't otherwise use Linux very much.
I'm an MCP and spend a lot of time working with Visual Studio and VS.NET,
and my rather extensive (and bloody expensive) set of apps for Web
development, MM Studio MX, Photoshop, Antechinus, etc. are all Windows
based. Since I keep up-to-date with security updates, and use firewall,
anti-virus, and scumware/spyware detection and prevention programs, my
system runs just fine, and quite securely, under XP. I've been online since
1983 and have never been infected with a virus, trojan, worm, or any of the
others of the menagerie of malware.
I suppose I should have seen the penguin connection when he also mentioned
adding programs, but it was so far off the thread topic it just escaped me.
OTOH, maybe it is a bird he's talking about and we're both off the mark. ;-)
Cheers,
Scott
.

to
add programs...
p[enguin? add programs? to what?
Please enlighten.
I think he means Linux (the official mascot being a penguin named Tux).
Adding programs depends on the Linux distribution, and usually done
with a Redhat Package Manager (RPM's) or a Debian Package Manager
(deb's). Or if you're really brave: download the source and compile it
yourself (which really isn't that bad).
If he really meant that he has a black and white water fowl that likes
cold water sitting atop his Dell computer then all the above is
meaningless. :-)
