The .htaccess file is, I believe, usually set to be 'hidden' or
'invisible'. Make sure your FTP program is set to *see* invisible or
hidden files. The only FTP program I use is Total Commander (more than FTP
- it's a one-stop solution to file management) and it shows
everything. I'd be surprised if there were no .htaccess files
somewhere. Are you able to view 'above' the 'public_html' (www root)
directory? If so, you should be able to see a .htaccess file there. If
so, DO NOT DELETE that one, but download it to your HD, open it in your
favorite text editor, copy its contents and paste them into an email
here. If I'm unable to decipher it and suggest possible remedies, I'm sure
someone on this list should be able to do so.
Good luck,
Tom

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the e-mail. I searched the whole site and could not find a
.htaccess file.
Anything else I can try?

Riva,
I think Sheila may be on the right track. However, the place to look for
the .htaccess file would be inside the 'images' directory rather than the
'root' directory for this type of problem. Some hosts allow a .htaccess
file for each folder/directory that is to be managed (such as password
protected directories, etc.)
Look inside your 'images' directory, and if there is a .htaccess file,
then BACK IT UP first and then delete it.
You will then need to create a blank 'index.html' file and upload it into
the 'images' directory. That will stop snoopy surfers from being able to
simply 'browse' the directory. It appears to me that this is currently
controlled at the server level because I get an error message mentioning
a missing 'index.htm' file. That lead to my suspicion that there may be
a .htaccess file managing the folder.
If no problems result from deleting the file, you may want to search for
a script to block image scrapers if that is a concern. There are many
free ones available - including those written in Perl and php.
If deleting the .htaccess file from inside the 'images' directory does
create a problem (it shouldn't), you can always restore it with the backup.
HTH,
Tom
