I'm transferring from an early model G4 to a new computer running Tiger. And have managed to cause a mess with my fonts. There are two types of fonts: protected system fonts and essential system fonts.

The "essential fonts" are in the HD library file. I put my old fonts there as well, wanting them to be accessible to any user. When the installed and my own fonts were mixed together, my computer began to run slowly and some apps choke altogether when loading. MS Word won't open at all. I ran a font utility scan and apparently I have some pretty corrupted fonts. I'm worried that font issues will wreak havoc with my computer in other ways.

I didn't back up the original Tiger-installed fonts file, so I don't know how to put things back the way they were. But, I did make a file in Font Book with the original Tiger-installed fonts [the good ones]. Is there an easy way to replace the backup Font Book file with the fonts in my Font Book hard drive file? By deleting the HD fonts file, even for a few seconds, in Font Book order to clear the file out and transfer the backup file fonts in there [the good fonts], will the temporary deletion cause my entire computer system to go blooey?

Unfortunately, I just don't understand much about the technical side of fonts, and I'm afraid of making things worse for myself. I have no budget for software, so need to find manual solutions.

Thanks,
Kimi
