Riva GIF is usually a poor format for displaying photos, since it typically doesn't handle gradations of colour too well. The photos might have been JPGs when you started, but once you dropped them into the animation, they all got munged into one big GIF. You might be better off (in terms of image quality, anyway) using a JavaScript slideshow with a set of JPGs.
