But is there any place to send it where it might help to shut down the
spammer?

Joseph, sadly for you, Peter and the rest of us, short of major
changes in how mail is processed, we can't eliminate spam. Even if
every mail server were properly configured (and we are a long way from
that), unless people stop responding, you can't eliminate spam. Spam
exists because it makes money.

You can cut down the amount you receive. One way is to let your email
client filter the mail along with insisting your isp do so or
changing to an isp which does.

If you insist on using Outlook, here's
MS's version of how to filter:

+++I have all sorts of boxes and two do have server filters. But I'm worse that Outlook -- I have Outlook Express!! Still, I find with all of them blacklisting does d o a fair job. My reason for chasing this one was in case there was some way of dealing with misuse of one's address for the visible reply.

In general, this wikipedia entry may be of help. Bayesian filters are
particularly popular and seem to be extremely effective:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail_filter

If you want a hardware solution much like a Bayesian filter, try Deep
Six Technology:(its impressive but really meant for large scale
operations, but even with that market it's cheap -- if much to much
for most home applications -- $999US)

http://www.deep6tech.com/

Finally, if you want to let others know about spammers, check the
google directory for those blacklists which seem to make sense to you:

http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Internet/Abuse/Spam/Blacklists/

Beyond this, there are other techniques advocated for obscuring email
addresses. They take more effort than they are worth in general. But
that's a matter of personal choice. Mostly you just have to live with
it.

+++But thanks for a very thorough answer. I will pust some thought into whether I want to do more. [My worst spamming now is my longstanding website address...
