This is the MS guide to setting up a home network. It's a good how to
beginning with installing a nic and finishing with printer sharing.
Have a look at it using IE since FF has some trouble with some of the
"features" of the pages.

And please be sure that you have a router between your network and the
cable modem. As Mark's cited article points out, using anything other
that a router (like a swithc or hub) just opens your machines to the
world.

When you are describing how you share, it sounds at times as if you
expect the shared folder to be duplicated on another machine. That
doesn't happen. The shared folder remains on its own machine. What
sharing does is let you see that directory and its contents from
another machine. If you add to the shared folder there is no need to
do more than refresh your share on the other machine to see the new
content.

The reason you create a share on each machine is so that the human can
see the shares in "my computer". Each share is identified as being on
a particular machine again for the convenience of the humans.

If you want to name all of the shared files the same, go ahead. They
will be identified by the computer name. Just don't expect to find
files in "shared on desktop" in "shared on laptop". That isn't how it
works.

If that's too simplistic, I appologize. But at times you seem to be
expecting that to happen. At other times you seem to understand the
process fully. Remote troubleshooting often trips over things like
this.

Follow the MS steps and it should fix all your problems.
