No, you're spot on.
Email should be text anyway. If it has to be HTML (ugh), keep it a simple
design, and don't expect it to be perfect.
The only way you'll get it pixel-perfect is with the whole email being an
image (no, I'm not being serious, don't go there.... it'd be stupid,
hideous, wasteful, and the majority of spam filters would probably eat
it).
I suggest a compromise:
1) Create the entire email as an Image
2) Convert the image to ASCII art
3) Paste the ASCII art into the email
4) Send the email.
you could of course cover all bases and attach the image to the
ascii-art email for those people who like their bandwidth being
consumed by real data instead of the SPAM that usually comes from the
BOT that's been downloaded from Kazaa...
