Hi Deb -

Yes, the i-Link is basically a Firewire connection -

On my laptop, it uses a smaller connector than other Firewire devices. No
big deal though if you have the right cable.

As for the speed differences, it is my understanding (I haven't personally
tested, however) that Firewire 400 (the common one) and USB 2 are pretty
much the same speed.

Subject: [wdvltalk] OT: is i-LINK firewire for transferring data?

Hi,

My Toshiba laptop has an i-LINK firewire port. The cable is 6 pin to
4 pin and package says it's for connecting computer to camcorders, digital
cameras and mp3 players and also says "connect a digital camcorder or other
FireWire device to your computer." Does anyone know if that would include
connecting to an external hard drive and being able to transfer my data for
backup purposes? I can't seem to get the laptop to recognize the external
using this cable. Could just be the same issue I had before and just have
to wait it out until it sees the external but I'm starting to think it may
be the wrong kind of connection or cable? I have done it using a USB2
cable, but of course firewire is going to be faster so hoping to make it
work. If one can connect a dig camera and transfer photos, I would think it
would work w/data but maybe I just don't know enough.
