Linux *is* for the masses. Check out the series of articles in
latest InfoWorld, where one of the writers handed the distribution
media and the documentation to her ten-year-old daugher...who had
the system up and running in two hours.

It's also for the masses in that a heck of a lock of ISPs (including
one of mine) are running it. It's rapidly becoming the best choice
for mail, web, and news servers.

Which is not to negate your points about the other OS's, which I think
are pretty accurate.

I can't tell you how much I'm enjoying this. Just as it was magnificent
to watch Unix destroy DEC in the face of Ken Olsen's hubris about how
it was "a hacker's OS", "for geeks only", and other total nonsense,
it's absolutely wonderful to watch Linux make inroads against Micro$oft's
products. I doubt it will happen -- but I would rejoice greatly
if it gave Bill Gates many sleepless nights. That SOB has a lot
to answer for.

I look forward to the day when Micro$oft gets splintered and bought
out by its competitors.
