Think of  a person deep in the middle of thought, some one goes
behind them and smacks them unconsious.  When they wake up they
are not going to be too happy about it.

Using the shutdown allows UNIX to write out its cache files and
make sure that all is well.

Above all, its just the RIGHT THING .. *g*
