I don't see it.

I have been mentioning Linux ever since I got this job. Recent articles in some
info magazines has my boss thinking about putting the intranet on linux. But
the current intranet (although woefully underdeveloped) is on an NT and all the
accounting software is MS. As much as I would like to use linux for the intranet
I could not recommend it. The whole idea is to integrate the accounting system
with the users on the network. Case in point. Just doing time sheets. I can
easily do a database with Perl/DBI/mysql/Apache on the linux but how do I tie
that into the accounting software? I found a DBI module for access but it just
didn't work like my other dbase work with msql. If I could find a way to update
an access database on the NT from the server on the Linux then Linux it would
be. (selects and updates were easy but I ran into trouble with inserts and I hate
not being able to talk direct with the database from a command line; can I do
that with ms access?).

I have been working with FileMaker Pro. It is just much easier to fathom than
MS access. It also has some pretty good tools to make web publishing very
easy. It is extremely easy to accept a bunch of defaults and use instant
publishing (just create the database and presto you have database-backed
website). But of course it just doesn't do exactly what you want and then you
must use a proprietary method to create custom pages...but still pretty easy.

As much as I hate it I will recomend some sort of BackOffice or Interdev
solution for the intranet. I have to do a little more research.
