When discussions about the pros and cons of Unix and NT arise, the holy
wars of computing reach a new level of activity. The Mac vs Wintel is
nothing comapred to the Unix vs NT!!!!!
IMHO, Unix (any version of Unix) is the only logical choice for a core
server set that handles network functions (DNS, mail, database, etc).
For the desktop, the key is the office automation offerings. Some
functions are better with a Mac and some are better with a Wintel.
What the article alludes to is the overall cost of computing. What is
missing is a real indepth look at the total cost (hardware, software,
support, training, recurring software updates, downtime, etc) of the
various platforms. The author cites some costs for mail systems dealing
with cost of software only. Factor in the cost of administrator
training/certification and AMOUNT of time required for adminsitration
duties. Also, what is the cost fo hardware to support a 50-user e-mail
base?? What is really required (in cost) to put together a 50-user
network with the various platforms.
I am in the midst of an "upgrade" to move to an NT-based network. You
would be surprised at the time and expense involved to bring 25 users on
line with Exchange and we still have not achieved the advertised
functionallity of the Exchange/Outlook solution.
In short, the article is fairly good. It does not address the real
meat of the issue of how much is really involved and how much does it
really cost to install any given network.
