My stats for the week ending July 7, for a technically oriented web site,
are:
MSIE all versions: 51.77% of total
MSIE 4.x 63.65%
MSIE 3.x 34.22%
MSIE 2.x 1.51%
MSIE 5.x 0.6%
NS all versions: 43.05% of total
NS 4.x 73.39%
NS 3.x 26.37%
NS 2.x 0.22%
and for a verrry non-technical site for the same week (with approximately
the same amount of traffic):
MSIE all versions: 45.57% of total
MSIE 4.x 38.68%
MSIE 3.x 60.09%
MSIE 2.x 1.22%
NS all versions: 46.46% of total
NS 3.x 50.46%
NS 4.x 46.31%
NS 2.x 2.76%
One thing to keep in mind (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) is
that AOL uses MSIE 3.x. From looking at my logs a gross amount of the users
for both sites come from Vienna, Virginia, which I think is AOL home.
Proportionately, there are less coming from Vienna on the technical site
than the non-tech site, but Vienna users are the _number one_ users of both
sites:
50% for the tech site come from Vienna, VA
64% for the non-tech site come from Vienna, VA
...which is certainly something to consider when designing a site, and when
determining why MSIE has the lead (or is closing in).
