Apple DID allow the stacks to be accessed on multiple machines via
Appletalk. There, A REAL Multi-Machine WEB! Apple had it first! I used
it at Apple at a Mac Special Interest Group meeting Software
Entrepreneur's Forum meeting, looking at pictures served by a Mac server
some ten to twenty feet behind me... probably within a year or two when it
came out. That would have been... 1989 - 1990, probably 1989.

Apple, obsoleting the future before anyone knows it! (Just
kidding.)

Why did it not catch on?

It was Apple-only, platform specific, making it CULTURE-SPECIFIC.
Only Mac kids, artsy creative types, which industry did not trust, did
this kind of stuff. Modems were way too slow for graphics, as was
Appletalk! Although easy to use, it was very complicated, with a huge
wall chart of commands for programming bells and whistles. (Not unlike
using JAVA for opening and closing screens, special effects, etc.) They
emphasized creative fluff. We pushed the utilitarian end. The market was
in the middle...

But wait! Xerox had it first! The Xerox Star, 1983? Icons to access
screens of text that could be on any of their networked computer stations.
Mice, Icons, etc. (Don't recall in-text linkages back then, however. It
Was Not Cheap, maybe $14,000 for one of their machines. Too expensive on
a per desk basis!)

Even before that, we had IBM's SPF menu system, but you had to type a
number of punch a specific function key, which initiated named actions.
There was no, "click here" type of flavor at all. And a professional
SPF programmer to set the menus up for everyone.
