in point of fact, Rhapsody is still on track for public release later this
year.   the Apple press release:

specifically says so.


i haven't seen any information from Apple to the effect that Rhapsody is
being phased out, or that they won't continue to develop it as a
server-style OS in paralell with the standard desktop OS.   the point of
the new strategy isn't that Apple is ditching Rhapsody as a bad idea, it's
just getting ready to combine the best of OS8 *and* Rhapsody for the next
generation of Apple operating systems.   personally, i think that's a good
thing.

i also find it a bit intriguing to see how much play this particular
misrepresentation of the strategy has received.   i kind of think the press
has fallen back on the old 'Apple is doomed' rhetoric as a matter of habit.
it's certainly more interesting to see a struggling company choke just
after making a turnaround than to talk about a fairly sensible software
development path.
