This is terrible, terrible news... these words were like a hard blow to the 
gut, utterly shocking.

Al and I have corresponded occasionally over the past couple of years 
about the special challenges and occasional heartache of our being single 
fathers, and I know his son was the absolute center and soul of his world. 
I feel so very bad for him -- he has been a good friend to me both on and 
off the list these past two years.

I feel I have to make some gesture, no matter how minor: I've uploaded a 
simple memorial page that I hope Al will have a chance to see some time in 
the future.  It is just a verse that I heard at the funeral of a loved one 
recently, one that stayed with me and brought a little comfort.
