For design business operation procedures, sample contracts, etc. purchase
the Graphic Artists Guild Handbook of Pricing and Ethical Guidelines from
www.gag.org or Barnes & Noble. It's about $25-30, a MUST HAVE, and will pay
for itself many times over. Another very helpful book is The Designer's
Commonsense Business Book, Barbara Ganim, $28, North Light Books, also
available at Barnes & Noble.

For more experience, do freebie projects for friends and non-profits.
The choice of whether to maintiain the site is up to you. It's hard to
budget for, and I find maintainance a pain, but if want to build a
portfolio of sites, you'll need to either do the maintainance yourself, or
keep a copy of your original design of the site in with your own web site.
If the client maintains the site, it will soon degrade into something
unrecognizable as your own work.
