George, you chopped me off at just the right point! Self Esteem.
What I missed, was other's esteem! Some invest in self esteem. Guys like
us invest in the stuff that gets others to esteem us for what we can do
for them. When I wanted to become a webmaster in 1995, I blew about $200
in books. Most of the books were crap, but they got me going, enough to
do a job, and then I invested more time to build a site for two guys who
helped save my life. Most of those low income guys would be so angry at
the first or second crap book, they wouldn't buy any more. And I doubt
they would do anything skillful for a couple of nice guys just because
they were nice to them.
All this self esteem stuff I keep hearing about has always struck me
as hollow self serving crap. Remember, an egotist has an ego that bruises
easily; a real pro chuckles insults off because he knows what he can
do, mostly because the world has rewarded him for doing it.
Whenever I get depressed, I pick up my resume, and walk through the
memories of the things I did and the people whom I worked with. And thus
what they thought of what I did. There is nothing like pulling someone's
chestnuts out of the fire, doing the seemingly impossible, to give one the
feeling of real self worth. And nothing like the false starts, failed
prototypes, and just plain work needed to get to that point, to give one a
feeling of humility!
Show me the money first? No, I know the money is out there. If I
give you a fair deal, (after sizing you up a bit,) I assume enough will
give me a fair deal to make it worth while. It isn't just that I have
faith in myself, it is that I have a reasoned faith in Humanity. And
thus, that I can contribute to Humanity enough to pay my own way.
By the way, last week's hottest search engine keyword was Fishing.
Having seen chat and sex related stuff on top of the search lists for
weeks, I thought it a fluke. Heavy use on several search engines, not just
one, and not just one day, so it looks legit. New stats, still not quite
formatted right, are being uploaded right now. www.WordSpot.com isn't
up quite yet, so see below.
