Well, basically, that is what power switches are for. When all else
fails, you pull the plug.
Now, that said, you have not tried ctrl-alt-F1 or any other function
key, have you? That is how you go back to a non-X console. Alt-Fx for
non X console swapping, and Ctrl-ALt-Fx for X to regular console swapping.
(ON Linux, the X console is always F7.) And when you find the console you
started X on, you Ctl-C that, which brings makes the X-Window an
ex-window.
Or, from root, you can do a
ps afx | more
or
ps afx | less
and see what processes are running, then
kill -9 process-number
or
killall process-name
Really quite simple after you have rammed your head through the
plasterboards a few times... (Or pestered the heck out of a friend during
the learning period. I've had the favor returned, too.)
