Don't know what version of unix you're running, but FreeBSD allows you to
switch between multiple virtual consoles with alt-Fx, where Fx is a function
key. The default is three consoles, but you can set up eleven. Generally,
startx is run from the first one, and the gui appears as a twelfth.

Just remembered, to switch from the gui, you need ctrl-alt-Fx...it wouldn't
hurt to try that in case you haven't already.

Do you have internet daemons running? If so, it may work to telnet in and
reboot remotely.

You probably won't cause major damage by power-cycling; after all, if the
alternative is leaving it sit unused, you can't do any worse. If it's been
idle for any length of time, the caches may already be written.

I'd reboot again after it comes up, to insure that any repairs done upon
startup take affect. It's probably not needed, but takes only a couple
minutes.
