DVD, i'm not certain.. i know the new OSX is supposed to have DVD
compatability built in, but don't happen to know if OS8 can do it yet or
not. the webpage at Apple:

    http://www.apple.com/dvd/

only mentions the DVD upgrade for G3 PowerBooks.

MPEG is a null issue with the latest version of QuickTime.. it builds MPEG
support directly into the OS, so any QuickTime comapatible application can
run your movies. QT3 is available for free download from the Apple
website:

    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/index.html

and you can pay a ~$30 registration fee to unlock the authoring features.

if you're looking for software that can run a generic MPEG on a Mac,
there's a piece of shareware called Sparkle which will do the trick.
