Yup, that's me and my Newton MessagePad. I've used a variety of PIMs on
both Mac and PC and was never fully satisfied. I've come to realize that it
was not necessarily due to unsatisfactory software, but to the fact that my
schedule works best when its with me. And not just on paper. The fact that
I can take notes, get email, surf the Web, etc is a big bonus.
Newton is not for everyone, particularly if you need to sync/transfer to
your desktop frequently. Pilots win hands down in that category. And $1000
is a lot compared to a $400 Pilot, but an MP2000 or 2100 can do so much
more. And did I mention that Apple no longer makes 'em? That could be
considered a drawback also. :)
A Pilot is a handheld "organizer" -- they make no claims otherwise. But an
MP is an incredibly powerful piece of equipment. Ground-breaking OS. Killer
handwriting recognition. PCMCIA modem & ethernet support. It is really a
multi-purpose machine; with the right user, one that can conceivably
replace a light-duty laptop.
The entire Newton line has a following that parallels the Amiga history. It
will probably live on with loyal users for years to come despite Apple's
best attempts to kill it. Software is still being developed, and it will be
a few h/w revisions before something like the Pilot can match it.
We Newton-lovers to cringe when we hear everyone rave about the Pilot,
knowing that Apple had a better solution years before. If only Apple had
chosen to shave off a few inches here and few dollars there. Maybe the
Newton would be on everyones mind (instead of Pilot and WinCE)?
Pilot-envy aside, try one. You may find that a handheld organizer suits you
and you don't need desktop PIM functionality at all.
