Buy "Linux in a Nutshell", one of O'Reily's nutshell books.

Linux machines are not supposed to be shut down. Many of us have one
or two Linux machines that have not reloaded the operating system in
weeks, and have not been shut down for more than a few hours a month for
years. Linux does all of its housekeeping after midnight, as do most
Unix type machines.

MS asks "Where do you want to go?"
Linux asks "What do you want to do?"
It is doers, not goers, who built this world!
