I'm not very experienced in this area, but if I remember correctly, a lot
of old
vehicles (farm tractors, buses, etc.), instead of keys, used something like a
push/pull type switch for on and off.  Another thing to look for is a starter
button on the floor board.  Deisels also used some sort of 'primer' switch to
heat up the 'glow plugs' so it would fire up.  That might be taken care of by
leaving the switch 'on' for a minute prior to hitting the starter, though.
