We rented a movie the other night. It was a very entertaining detective
story, called (I think) Zero Point or something similar. In the story, the
detective never meets face to face with his clients. He sends his lawyer
instead, who regales the client with case histories of the amazing feats
the detective has pulled off, then hands over a piece of paper and says,
"These are our rates. We sometimes work pro bono when a case qualifies
(yours doesn't) but we never charge anywhere in between."
I thought this line was worth remembering next time I'm tempted to take a
job for what the client says they can afford.
