Well, you certainly cannot label the dozens of online businesses in this
area as all "scams". Some may be.
A month or so ago I posted on this very subject. I know a company that
hired one of these types of businesses (I will _not_ be naming names). They
claimed they could guarantee that a site I was building would come up on
the first page of a search engine query when certain key words were used.
3 months later, my client fired them because they could not deliver. They
got their money back (thousands of dollars). They found that sometimes
their web site would pop up near the top. Sometimes it would be 100 down on
the list. It varied wildly.
Since then, I have taken all such claims by these types of companies with a
grain of salt.
That said, some of them certainly may offer good advice about logical
things to do to your pages to increase your chances of being found. These
have been discussed before on this list.
I am not labeling all these companies are frauds. Only that I believe it is
not possible, no matter what you do, to guarantee that a site will pop up
at the top of a search list consistently, unless perhpas your site covers a
subject that no one else does <G>. The search engine indexes change daily.
It is not possible to control them in this manner. IMHO.
