I can believe this.
My first exposure to Quark was in 1990 when the ad agency in SF I worked
for was hired to do Quark's magazine ads. I had zero computer experience,
and my asst. art director had just begun fooling around with Pagemaker. He
was given a copy of Quark and we were told that the ad had to be done start
to finish 100% digital. Now, I must admit that I was absolutely
clueless--so clueless that when Quark kept asking for a desktop background,
I kept sketching in the top of a drawing table! My assistant kept calling
Quark tech support for help until finally the tech support guy HUNG UP on
him! Finally, the agency was fired and told to just send the unfinished ad
files to Quark. We did, and much to my horror, they ran the *unfinished*
spread ad in MacWorld magazine. The text had just been dumped into place
and had not been spec'd or copy-fit around numerous spot illustrations: 1
1/2 of the six columns of type were completely empty!
When I got my own copy of Quark two years later, I relied entirely on the
good graces of friends for help. The only time I ever called Quark was once
when an installation floppy was dead on arrival. Much as I love the
program, I am amazed that the company has survived this long. And even more
amazed that they have 95% of the market.
