I hope this post isn't too far off topic. If anyone can direct me to a better
place to send this type of request, please let me know. This stuff is a little
over my head.
I got a gig to help set up a new website from the ground up. Redhat Linux
release 5.1 for Intel has come highly recommended, so I'm wanted to look at
using it on an IBM server in the series we've been purchasing. We have a
Netfinity box that's sitting idle for a few weeks, so I've got a bit of time
to try Red Hat out on the hardware. The details are as follows
IBM Netfinity 5500 Server
- dual 350MHz, Pentium II processors
- 256MB ram
- builtin - floppy, IDE cdrom, 1MB S3 video adapter
- builtin IBM ServerRAID II controller
- 6 4.5 GB disks in a RAID config
- Builtin 10/100 NIC
with a few additional goodies - tape drives, extra NIC, etc. not yet installed
The Redhat 5.1 release does not recognize the builtin IBM ServerRAID II
controller. We tried a few of the Adaptec choices to no luck ... any suggestions?
Is this too much hardware to run Linux on? The other OS that my sys admin
knows well is SCO UNIX, which is probably what we'll use if the Linux doesn't
pan out.
