Mumble...
Not evrything I'm going to say is the result of direct experiments so
take it with care...
I think Cyrix is out now. It used to build very good processors but
now I think Intel and AMD are superior.
AMD now sells K6 2 with 3DNow and MMX they are very cheap
compared to Intel and 3DNow if supported by the software is very
fast.
Intel has superior FPU (floating point unit) much faster than the
competitors.
NT is known to run faster on Intel CPU.
Intel CPU should do better in a multitasking environment.
This is what I read/heard and what should be the consequence of
the different architectures. So even if I didn't verify these things
they seem reliable.
The oonly 2 things I know for sure are Intel FPU are faster.
I've run some very intensive test (assembly coded) on the FPU on
different processors (Cyrix 200, AMD 200, Intel P133 and P2 233)
and Intel was faster even with lower clock.
One thing make me think a bit... I've done also some intensive
test on memory copying, moving on a Cyrix 200 SIMM 50ns,
anonimous motherboard and on a Intel P2 233 with DIMM at
100MHz and a MSI motherboard.... well the Cyrix was much more
faster (about 20%).
I've done the same test on my old Intel 133 and things seems
reasonable... just a little bit slower???
Now I have an old P120 and I'll have soon a new P2, maybe a 300
or an AMD... I'll do other test...
I think I'll buy some normal DIMM and put it on my P2 233 (66 MHz
bus) and place the 100MHz DIMM on the new computer to
understand if this is the problem... maybe using 100MHz DImm on
a CPUwith a 66MHz bus desincronize bus and RAM and add wait
states???
But after all I think web designer and internet servers don't need
fast FPU and shouldn't run NT but Linux. Since AMD cost really
less than Intel. It would be better if you use your money to buy a
SCSI FAST HD or some more memory!!!!
Maybe Photoshop can take advantage of a faster CPU.
I haven't a definitive verdict on memory copying/moving... and this
thing is very important on evryday computer usage...
A good place to look is Tom's Hardware (?)

I checked... the URL is correct.
