That was the infamous Grace Hopper, who did make Admiral.  She
was also one of the founders of COBOL and I guess, in spite of
all she did, we can blame her for the Y2K problem eh?

She used to be a frequent guest speaker at an organization where
I was Program and Arrangements Chairman.  She had the simplest
ways of teaching a difficult topic.  One that I remember clearly
was how she described the difference between a microsecond and a
nanosecond.  She had a small piece of string that represented a
microsecond.  Then she says she calls the Pentagon and asks for a
nanosecond and they send over this huge rope.  The visual impact
is still clear decades later.
