Solaris is Sun's version of Unix. It currently comes in two flavors:
Sparc-based, and Intel-based. Both are seeing heavy competition from
Linux, FreeBSD, and BSD Unix; it will be interesting to see how Sun
addresses this in the upcoming release of Solaris 2.7.

To add to the confusion, about five years ago, Sun retroactively labeled
their SunOS Unix (which was based on Berkeley Unix, as opposed to Solaris,
which is based on AT&T System V Unix) as "Solaris 1.X".

So,

        SunOS 4.1.3 = Solaris 1.1
        SunOS 4.1.4 = Solaris 1.1.1
----------above this line is really SunOS, below is really Solaris -------
        SunOS 5.1 = Solaris 2.1
        SunOS 5.2 = Solaris 2.2
        ...         = ...
        SunOS 5.7 = Solaris 2.7

(There was also a version of SunOS for the 386 architecture, but let's
not go there, because the nomenclature just gets worse.)

SunOS, aka Solaris 1.X, is effectively dead, although Sun is still
issuing patches for critical bugs and Y2K compliance for it. Those of
us who strongly criticized Sun for abandoning what was (and is) the
technically superior BSD Unix lineage for the more corporately correct
System V lineage have noticed that most of the engineering in releases
2.1 through 2.6 has been directed at trying to regain the performance
seen in SunOS. Now that they've finally gotten there -- and contracted
a mildly ugly case of software bloat along the way -- it will be interesting
to see if they trim off some of the baggage in this release.
