Lets see now... Um... A quickie review, then what I have done. There
is:
Folklore
Manuals written by those who made the stuff
Case studies
Best Practices -- ongoing evaluations by those who do things.
Legislation
Case Law
And on the media side, we have
Oral Traditions (Surprisingly common in industry!)
Written documentation
Text files
E-Mail archives (with search engines of sorts)
Web pages...
Video tapes
Investigational
Casual/semi-casual documentation of practices
Formal Training Tapes
Perhaps you could be more specific as to what the application is, or
what kind of organizations, time frames, media, etc... This is a Very
Large Topic!
My own work has touched the computerization and cross indexing of
massive documentation to provide access to critical passages for assisting
the comprehension of custom manufacturing procedures in the aerospace
field, and some other fields.
Basically, I automated the creation of a 7 megabyte web site from
documentation. The site was used to study the documentation, trace
through some of the manufacturing step inter-relatedness and definitions.
We learned what had to be done for the project, and used that information
to formulate a bid. (Saved my client when we realized the degree to which
things were NOT adequately defined. The client rejected the fixed bid
request, and bid it time and materials. We were sub-sub contractors to a
sub-contractor for a major project. When the sub-contractor saw the scale
of what we had determined was undefined, they withdrew the
request-for-bid, and went back to the prime contractor for clarification.)
I later used the same techniques on other documentation, in one case
creating a site that came close to a gigabyte in size. We "swam around"
in that one for a while, before I had to move on, leaving it for the rest
of the team. The usability of that one was somewhat marginal due to the
nature of the documentation. Had things gone otherwise, (El Nino damaged
the lab I was working in, forcing me to leave due to water damage,) we
might have restructured it and gotten more specific information from it.
