Have you ever read anything about split-brain research?
I haven't tried to read the technical literature on it (I'm afraid
my limited understanding and vocabulary would make it painfully slow),
but I have read second-hand commentary on it, mostly in Carl Sagan's
wonderful book, 'THe Dragons of Eden'.
If I recall correctly, the corpus collosum is that part of the brain
which connects the two hemispheres; one of the early (?) treatments
for severe epileptic seizures which did not respond to other approaches
was to severe it in order to (roughly speaking) prevent the electrical
disturbance which started in one hemisphere from propagating to the other.
The idea was to confine the seizure to one side of the brain so that the
other could maintain some semblance of control.
This surgery was surprisingly successful, although not without its
side-effects -- which were somewhat as you describe. The accounts
that Sagan relates are *fascinating*, and well worth reading the
book for.
BTW, I'd also like to recommend Sagan's last book: "The Demon-Haunted World".
It is, I think, the best thing he ever wrote, and it's a wonderful set of
essays on the relationship between science, philosophy, and humanity.
