Well, "more than adequate" was something of an understatement. Perhaps I
should explain that we were both doing 4C print design as well as web
design on 2 souped up IIci's until just over a year ago. It got so bad that
I simply stopped accepting 4C bookcover design jobs. We finally took the
plunge when we were faced with having to either turn down $10,000 worth of
GIF animation work, or upgrade. The timing was good as 8500s and 9500s were
being discontinued.
Do you know how long it takes to do a CMYK conversion on a bookcover on a
33 mhz IIci? Try 1 hr. Then, another hour to do it again after it crashes
when you try to save the file. I used to keep the house a lot cleaner back
in those days--lots of spare time on my hands. But the most annoying part
of the IIci was trying to surf the web on it, as the browsers would crash
on at least every other page. So surfing was more like click, crash,
restart, click, crash, restart....
What makes me bust my gut is designers who don't think they can possibly do
web design on *anything* less than 300 mhz. Or my retired acquaintance who
just upgraded his 8500 to an 8600 -- and all he uses is for is e-mail!!!
Gimme a break.
