this points up the issue that Microsoft's version of Java is currently
under litigation from Sun, who claim that it's nonstandard. i'm fairly
sure NS assumes a standard Java. NS crashing due to incompatability with
Microsoft's nonstandard Java puts a new spin on the question of who's to
blame.
in practical terms, NS has no chance at all if Microsoft has the right to
redefine the JVM to suit its own needs. nor should there be any surprise
that Microsoft's own product is, and will continue to be, better integrated
with their private JVM. Netscape's basic choice is to stick to a standard
Microsoft wants to subvert, and accept random crashes as punishment, or to
climb onto the Microsoft JVM treadmill, and hand control of a fundamental
part of their product over to their prime competitor. neither really
satisfies.
in the realm of personal opinion, i wouldn't be at all surprised to find
that the Microsoft JVM has been specially tuned for marginal compatability
with anything NS needs. it's just the case of leveraging the OS all over
again, and the semi-useless version of Windows they released under court
order shows just how willing they are to cripple a product if it suits them.
i've also heard (and am willing to believe, though i have no direct
evidence) that Microsoft's private JVM is 'better' than the standard
version on Windows platforms because it's more closely tied to the OS
treadmill. if it suited Microsoft's purposes to release a fully-compliant
JVM which was just as powerful as their private one, i have no doubt that
they could do so.
