Of course, one does have to worry that they might form some kind of
conspiracy to release the methane clathrates (a kind of ice-methane
"stuff" that does not melt till 20 to 60 degrees F., and actually burns,)
and turn over our climate. It is believed that a landslide liberated a
bunch of megatons of methane from this stuff in the Mediterranean some
bunch of thousands of years ago, creating a green house effect that ended
the last ice age. Dangerous stuff! Plenty more of that all over the sea!
The ultimate terrorist attack would be to nuke an area of sea floor rich
in this stuff. (I was going to write a novel on that, but the sov's
collapsed before I could get my act together. And Tom Clancy's Red Storm
Rising was better.)

...Methane clathrate was discovered decades ago and is found on Earth in
places where methane and water are in chemical contact at low
temperatures and high pressures. Large clathrate deposits exist in
sediments underlying permafrost regions and in marine sediments.
Because of its high methane content and global abundance, it's a
potential energy source for the future.
"It's estimated by others that the energy stored in methane clathrate
deposits on Earth amounts to twice that in all conventional
hydrocarbon deposits of oil, gas and coal," Durham says.....
Reality is just stranger than we can imagine!
