1) two years ago anyway, milk cartons still contained bleached kraft pulp
2) not bleaching wood pulp, using alternative methods to whiten the wood,
have their own sets of problems. there is higher toxicity associated with
untreated (no WWT) *non-bleached* kraft pulp mill effluent than with
*bleached* pulp mill effluent.
3) there is only one non-chlorine bleached kraft mill in the US - (as
opposed to non-bleached, ie, brown) - it is in CA and in exchange for using
non-chlorine bleaching - it got a dispensation and didn't have to install
secondary wastewater treatment (the only mill w/such an exclusion in the
US). and i just pointed out about the issues associated with toxicity of
nontreated, non-chlorine bleached kraft pulp mill effluent.
bleaching changes the characteristics of the wood pulp -- strengthens,
increases absorption.
Good lord - i cannot believe i'm doing this -- i haven't thought of this in
2+ years ...
