I'm working on a site that has a chunk of stuff sub-contracted. The organization that is handling this (the publication of daily news summaries) is revamping their publishing systems, and needs someone with PERL and XML knowledge, and a feel for the pre- to post-production processes of the publishing industry. The one firm requirement would be living in the DC area (they're in Alexandria). (They have some work to contract remotely, but this position would be in-house.) Their request to me reads like this: "Speaking of happy, do you know any moderately-skilled scripters who are not real happy w/ their job & are looking for a more sane, pleasant place to call their home? If we go with the Perl/XML option, we'll need to hire someone to maintain, expand, etc. the system, which won't be easy given how tight the labor market is. Although this is not a place to get rich--we pay decently, but there are no stock options--it's a fantastic place to work & have a life. Aside from the fact that everyone here is really friendly and nice (my boss still asks me about once a week if I'm happy!!), any hacker could work 9 hour days, have a flexible schedule, sane deadlines, and solid support. It's a perfect environment for someone w/kids or someone who wanted to zip through their paid work and spend the rest of their hours on the job working on, for, ex, an Open Source project (I'm pretty sure I could sell this to my boss if the person was very skilled).
