What would they sue for... or would they care?

Legal Harassment type suits have been filed against people; but when
the courts realize what is going on, they generally hit the filers. I am
sure the software community in general would do their best to act as
interested parties, friends of the court, etc. in support of the right to
write software. It is also possible to approach this as a purely freedom
of speech / freedom of expression constitutional angle.

And... contempt of court charges have no fixed durations...

If this is true, then... well... Unkle Billy isn't the only guy there
with a memory leak and a stack wrap incursion on his code segment. Time
to power MS down, cause it's in microcode, and the reset button isn't
going to clear it! I don't know how much the DOJ could really do... If
he's trained his underlings, it might be just like cutting up starfish and
tossing them back. (Each piece regenerates another whole.) Do they have
corporate death penalties, in which the executives are forbidden to engage
in a particular field of endeavor for some time?

But you know, BG could still walk out of a major jail term as a
Nobel prize winner. Scenario: He gets AIDS from unnatural activities in
prison. In a desperate search for a cure, he pours his billions into AIDS
research, and finds a cure. With or without the donation to the good of
humanity, he and his team would get showered with prizes.

(I really don't think he would do well in prison! Not between his
psychological need for control, and his soft white flesh.
already has rages that he has learned to control, I think the resulting
hormonal and adrenalin excursions could ruin his hardware, not to mention
warp his software much further; kind of like taking a new engine out and
trying to do the Indy 500 with it before breaking it in. He might even be
declared insane after that, to keep him from doing a lot of black ops with
his fortune. The book "The Microsoft File" suggests there is already a
fair bit of black ops going on in some of their code.)

When you really look at it tough, software is a piddling market.
Pharmaceuticals are a better market. Professionals are taught to
administer very expensive things in educational institutions funded by the
pharmaceutical co's. Doctors who no longer seem to look for causes, just
treat symptoms as per The Book. And people who are motivated by Pain and
Suffering, cough up all the money the pharmaceutical co's want just to
stay sick but out of pain.

BG is in the wrong business. His mind set is not unique! Perhaps
modestly dated, Frick, Carnegie, Rockefeller, etc. come to mind; but there
are plenty of other guys playing with patents that do worse than BG.
Having the DOJ take BG down might remind a lot of them to ease up.
