Glad you brought this up; I meant to comment on it originally.
Java was *not* developed to supplant UNIX (it couldn't; it's a
language, not an OS). It was originally developed (during the "Oak"
stage of its life) as a language to use in consumer electronics.
It was after they'd significantly developed the language that the
project developers started to realize how applicable it was to
Internet applications.
