well that's interesting --- wonder who else got bounces??
this was "sunday maintenance" day at NW Nexus (halcyon.com) but they
generally don't take the mail server down ... and I don't remember such a
warning.
so .. i head over to system status, and guess what (al's auto-check timing
was spot-on):

At approximately 12:00PM, our authentication servers and our
mail server mail.halcyon.com went down. This meant that many
of our users were not able to connect to the internet or
check their email during this time. Currently, both the
authentication servers and mail servers have been fully
restored and users should not experience trouble logging on
or checking email.

Jeez -- it looks like the system was inoperable for TWO HOURS! I was at the
Mariott taping a demo video -- so wouldn't have known.
