Hi Brent
That's an excellent site, thanks.
I've just finished my Leonid watch... yes, a day early... you can't trust
the weather or the accuracy of the predictions. Here (just north of
Brisbane, Australia) I watched from 3am until 4:10am by which time it is
very light, though you could still see a few major stars.
It was a great preview. I don't know how many I saw, 50-60?? There were 3
that weren't Leonids but all the rest "radiated" from Leo. That doesn't
mean you see them in Leo but that if traced back seem to come from Leo.
There were a couple of bursts of 4-5 little ones in a few seconds and some
very spectacular ones high up that travelled a third of the sky overhead.
I was standing at the beach front (mud flats) so I had a big sky and had
the car radio on as I described earlier. It worked well and added another
dimension and many times the radio sound also enabled me to see a meteor I
would have missed. ie the sound made me do a rapid scan around the sky to
see if I could see what was making the noise.
The radio did not pick all the visual ones up but then again it "saw" many
others I did not. It was better if the meteor was "between" me and the
station (of course). One "annoying" thing was that at dawn the aeorplane
flights start and the radio does pick them up too and the flight path north
was right across Leo. :(
I'm looking forward tothe "big one" tomorrow.
thanks
Bruce
