(Fuming at the stupidity of some people!)
I hereby withdraw any suggestions that SuSE Linux is suitable for use
by webmasters. It does not support the use of the word "webmaster" as an
e-mail address, because it is over eight characters long. RedHat Linux
does not restrict this, or didn't as of 5.0. Nor do most of the Unix
systems that I have used.
SuSE's support page,
http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb_e/ke_loginname.html explicitly states one
must accept this limitation, and alias the name from the /etc/alias file
for incoming mail. This does nothing for mailing lists where one has to
use the subscribed e-mail address!
Having upgraded a system to SuSE, I find that I must now toss that
installation aside and install Red Hat, as I have quite a few hundred
pages with the e-mail address "webmaster" on it, not all of which are at
my site, am subscribed to several mailing lists as webmaster, and use it
in correspondence with many people every day. This was going to be my new
gateway machine... Not till I install something else! Red Hat goes on
that machine tomorrow!
Some of you might wish to tell [EMAIL PROTECTED] (SuSE Support) what you
feel about this arbitrary restriction regarding a name and title we all
know and use.
Oh, and if you have a choice, do use your webmaster ID when giving
them a piece of your mind; I did, when I pointed out the economics of
altering six sites full of web pages to conform to their new "policy".
