Most Unix systems (still) have an eight-character login name limitation.
It's gradually going away, though, as that particular hardwired limit
gets changed to a #define.

Ummm, it works fine for me. I do it all the time: I just arrange
for outgoing mail to have the "From" field be rewritten by sendmail.
That's really pretty easy now -- in fact, it's even covered in
the sendmail FAQ 'cause so many people use that particular feature.
