hi barry,

a little bit on file names and such on a mac

mac uses a resource fork to store information about the file (so that it
doesn't need to have an extention like eg .gif), it's creator and such.

if you transfer a site to a mac, it will think that everything is generic
text files (since your files won't have any resource fork data), although
your browser will know the difference between a gif and a html-page, since
it uses the extensions, and not the resource-fork info

this will cause some confusion when you want to open such a file by
double-clicking on it: who knows what program is going to open the file,
most likely your mac will suggest a list of programs and it's up to you to
choose

best way to open a file then is from within your editing program of choice
(photoshop, word, whatever) and if then you save it again, it will get
resource-fork info, and confusion is over

a mac is intuitive and versatile, thanks to stuff like resource forks, but
it won't choke on files that lack resourceforks, it will just do what most
computers do in that case: go bleep in an unintelligable way, which means
that you'll have to do a little thinking for yourself
(eg: this is a html-file, so i won't want to open it in photoshop: let's try
a text-editor)
