MAJORITY OF SCHOOLS WIRED, TEACHERS NOT PREPARED
Market Data Retrieval (MDR) has released its annual Technology in Education
1998 report, a comprehensive look at technology use in the nation's K-12
public schools.

Key findings include:

(1) While 23 percent report that virtually all of their teachers use
computers daily, almost 22 percent of schools report that none of their
teachers use computers daily for instructional purposes;

(2) Only seven percent of schools reported that the majority of their
teachers are at an Advanced skill level (able to integrate technology use
into the curriculum). Nearly 38 percent of schools classified the majority
of their teachers as beginners (learning basics) and 43 percent are at
intermediate skill level (uses variety of applications);

(3) Internet access has increased dramatically. Today, 85 percent of
schools have access compared to 70 percent in 1997 and 32 percent in 1996.
The Internet also is moving into the classroom. In 1998, 44 percent of all
classrooms had Internet access;

(4) This year 50 percent of instructional-use computers are in the
classroom compared to 45 percent in 1997. The percentage in computer labs
has decreased from 46 percent in 1997 to 41 percent in 1998; (5) The
student to instructional-use computer ratio has improved significantly.
Five years ago there were 12 students for every computer, in 1997 the ratio
was seven-to-one and in 1998 it is six-to-one;

(6) There has been a big jump to multi-media computers. In 1997 there were
21 students per multi-media computer, a number that has improved to 14
students per computer in 1998.

= commentary =

of course, had the schools been buying macs all this time, all there
machines purchased this decade would have been multimedia <g>

seriously - a local school district has agreed to a controversial
proposition - they get 'free' multimedia computers in exchange for the
company monitoring the student's use of the web - including demographics
[age, gender, zip code].

based on this report - just WHAT are those machines going to be used for,
education-wise???

Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they
should live next door and just visit now and then.
