Ann,
I'm not sure how Win95+ handles it's SWAP file as regards
compressed drives, but it used to be that with Win3.x, it
was recommended that the HOST drive be left large enough
to accommodate the SWAP file.
Another consideration has to do with already compressed
files such as ZIPs, GIFs, JPEGs, and other archive-type
files -- including self-extracting EXE files. Since they
are already compressed, keeping them on a compressed drive
actually uses more space due to the additional compression
overhead added by the drive itself.
One distinct advantage to compressed drives (other than the
obvious additional storage space) is that most programs load
and start up faster because a smaller file is read from the
drive. With the speed of today's modern processors, the time
for compressing/de-compressing is insignificant to the point
of being un-noticable.
Personally, I used to use STACKER for ages until the price
of storage went through the basement. With the price of
4+ GIG hard drives now in the $150 range, I much prefer to
just add another drive when needed rather than add even
more overhead to an already bloated operating system by
compressing a drive. Some older laptops with smaller drives
and no upgrade path are an exception, though. 500 meg just
doesn't seem to be enough for Win95 systems that are used
for Internet access, so I've resorted to using Drivespace
under that condition with relative satisfaction.
Good luck,
Tom Fosson
