Chad,
I've dealt with the .us domains. The problems stem from the differing ways
they are administered at the local level. The US Domain Registry at the
Information Sciences Institute of the University of Southern California
handles registration but will grant local "rights" to geographical domains
to legal representatives to administer and DNS as they see fit within
certain guidlines. Luckly I got to register with USC-ISI as a county
representative and it was no different than internic except for it was free.
Go to http://www.isi.edu/us-domain/ and read about .us, it was my
understanding that one of its main purpose is for personal use and the
administrators are not following the policies if they are in fact
restricting personal registration to near impossible.
You can register one with some other place in NM if you can, there are no
residency restrictions normaly. If you have access to a DNS server and a
friendly city or county suit you may want ot consider getting a regional
from USC-ISI.
